Blog assignment 3

The book I have chosen to read is Gossip Girl – All I want is everything by Cecily von Ziegesar. The story takes place in New York where you follow a couple of friends from the upper class that lives on the Upper East Side and their new acquaintances from Brooklyn that doesn’t live a life in luxury as they do.

Gossip Girl is the name of a gossip blog that you can find online and/or send text messages to the teenagers. It contains gossips about the main characters and no one knows who is behind Gossip Girl. They can also share gossips with Gossip Girl so that it will be spread to everybody else by texting or send an email to Gossip Girl.

For this third blog assignment have I chosen to focus on this gossip blog. Because with Internet, mobile phones, blogs and so on, there are also some negative sides that we are not always thinking about. It’s a very easy and effective way of spreading gossip about other people. With just a few keystrokes you can spread incorrect information that can be read by so many people, something that maybe the writers don’t think about.

Actually, I have an example of this from the reality. Just before I became a student at the university there was a blog like this. The focus was on the people that were taking part of the student life and everything that it involves, on my faculty. Nobody knew who were behind the blog, but the author or authors managed to have an incredible track of what happened at the party.

Internet can also be a helpful tool in many ways and most people use it daily. Nowadays it is sometimes used as a complement during the recruitment process. The person you hoped to be your future boss discovers photos of you partying on Facebook and then your chance to get the job is equal to zero. Of course you have to keep in mind that this book is only fiction and this is not something that is common. But that we post photos of ourselves from a party is something that is, unfortunately, very common today and most teenagers don’t think about the consequences that this could lead to.

The golden rule – “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself” fits perfect with spreading gossip about other people as well. But we have to consider the other aspect as well. Be careful about what you write about yourself as well, because it could lead to bigger consequences than you can imagine.
